Buck Gardener Double Nasty II- it will make even the newest fowler sound good.

Practice, Practice, Practice is all i can tell you. I blow my calls every single day on the way to and from work and on the weekend take a break 3 hours a day outside. it is the only way to get the sounds and the cadences you are looking for.

While there are others, and even some relatively inexpensive custom made calls if you know where to go, I agree you can't go wrong with the Gardener Double Nasty II. Lots of new guys buy it .... experienced callers, too.

Cabelas, etc should have some packages with the call and cd/dvd's to help you learn to call ... and when to call.

I also agree about doing all the practice ... with time you can become an expert in different situations, which is really cool when you're out there. I get lots of stange looks at red lights when people in the cars next to me hearing me practice calling. [up][hihi]

i consider myself an experienced called and i still bough that call last year to toy with and i STILL use it when i am out there (every now and then) I blow mostly single reed custom calls and i bought that call to get used to double reeds...and i love the thing now.[up]

I'm going out to cabelas on monday so I will be picking it up.
get the one that has the double nasty II, CD for your truck, DVD, and sound machine. it is the PERFECT package for a new caller. VERY inexpensive too[up]

Duck commander, Quack head, Johnny Stewart to name a few. Double reed calls are by far the easiest to master. Single reed calls will require more practice. Before you see what cabela's has to offer check out Mack's prairie wings (mackspw.com) they have one of the biggest selection of calls in the east. Don't be fooled by price, some of the cheapest calls will produce as good or better then the 150 dollar acrylic's

Haydel DR-85.....Very good beginner call and its only $18.[up]

I want to tell you my double reed is one of the best out there but the truth is any call will and does call ducks if you know how to talk to them. small keg bores with big barrel bores the reeds work easy not be very loud, but will stick with good air, means when you get excited on a pair coming in and start to breath hard BAD NOTE[rofl][wallmad] mid size barrel bore with mid size keg bore good sounds with easy air and good volume. reed is a little slower but good air makes her talk. mid barrel bore with big keg bores that baby will reach out and touch her at 500 yards but will blow her side ways at 20 yards. takes more air and tongue action with good air control in the diaphragm.

think of these things one you do not blow a call but talk into it. when you talk your air flow is not stopped and started every time you say a word but in fact it is a constant pressure the only time the air pressure is stopped is when you run out of air and take a breath. don't believe it say the pledge to the flag normal and see how many times you stop air flow. the words are done with your mouth and tongue. so duck calls you are saying the t and c and ca sounds hut and what for your quacks tic ca for your chuckles oh and your da da for your feeders

I give the calling talks alot at waterfowl outings I tell every one to learn to use a duck call make music with them play a song with it. it teaches air control and tongue action. practice talkin to ducks not making duck sounds. I can say a bunch of words like boy cat big little fat no what does it mean I am drunk or nuts so you are not going to come to me but if I say words in a statement or sentence then you may come. you may see some cool duck calling things comin out here real soon.

Here is a field test done with my calls and a few others I was in there with some top notch guys.

I got the double nasty on monday and have been practicing using the little book that comes with it and listening to the caller as well and I sound nothing like it. So hopefully after a lot more practice I sound decent.

one of the biggest problems with new callers is they do not put the air into the call to see what is happing. force is what makes the call work. you need to see how a call works before you can go easy or hard and sound like a duck. as a rule put air in that thing like you are talkin to some one across a room with a party going on. after you feel the reed action then you can start to sound like a duck till then it is rough.

I know this is an old thread but didn't want to post a new one. I am new to waterfowl hunting and got the first duck yesterday and have to admit I am addicted and can't wait for november. Read this thread and just want to know if the Buck Gardner Double Nasty is still the call of choice for beginners and veteran hunters? any feedback greatly appreciated. Don't want to spend a lot of money either since I'm still in college.
