I got up late yesterday 5:20 but luckily I didn't have a long ride to my spot. I was running so late, I didn't even put on my camo gear since I was hunting a ground blind. So I get in the blind around 5:45 and it was already too light to put the dekes out. The good thing was that as I was getting in the blind, there were at least 5 gobblers going at it up in the trees. I gave a few soft calls and they were responding like crazy. I went silent and waited for them to come down. One finally came down and literally landed ten yards in front of the blind. It was a jake and I decided to wait and see if one of the other "talkers in the trees" was a nice Tom. Not being the most experienced turkey hunter, I wasn't sure what to do. I ended up waiting until the jake cleared my right by about 40 yards. In the meantime 4 more came off roost. I hit the box call and the the jake to my right went nuts, which in turn drew the other 4 in like they were on a string. unfortunately they were all jakes also. I decided I would try to take one since I had never harvested a turkey before. I drew undetected and let the arrow fly. He jumped initially but kept walking....WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!?! The other 3 got a little startled but not too much. Well the one I shot at walked about 20 yards and went down never to get up again. It was broadside shot at 22 yards, perfect shot high and right through the vitals. Not the biggest bird...15 pounds, 4" beard and 5/8" spurs but he's my first and I'll be smoking the breasts on the Big Green Egg today.
