Since I've been mentioning that I would like to accompany Gobblergetter on one of his morning runs through his trapline, he invited me to tag along today and I have to say that I had a great time watching him and learning as well.
We probably went through more than half of the snares only to find them all empty before we got to the one holding this pretty Grey Vixen
I tried giving her a talking to the way we have all seen pictures of Mike doing, but she didn't want to hear what I had to say and tried to bury her head in some of the hay brush
Mike then showed me how to properly pick her up so that I could have a closer conversation with her
And after a few attemps on my part, I finally got a good hold of her
But she still didn't want to hear what I had to say
She was dispatched quickly and efficiently, the trappers way
Mike then showed me the proper way to hold her after the dispatch had been attended to
That was the easy part
I spent the remainder of the morning watching Mike check the rest of his traps, all empty. But this Grey Fox was his FIRST Grey for this Trapping Season. He also showed me how he follows tracks to determine where he is going to set his snares and showed me how he sets them. I saw the difference in snare sizes for the different species he is trying to trap and he showed me how he brushes in the edges of the snare to try to get the fox and coyote to run through the snare and not along side of it.
I really had a great morning traveling Gobblergetter's Trapline with him and learning in the process. And to answer just a few questions before they get asked . . .
1) Yes, I dispatched the fox
2) No, I will not be taking up trapping anytime soon, but would seriously consider taking the course.
3) Yes, I AM going to eat the fox !!! Mike is going to quarter her up for me after he skins her and I am going to make some kind of Fox Stew. I'll let you all know what I honestly think of it after I have done so.
Thanks again Mike for an interesting and fun filled morning [up][up][up]
