On Thursday i took my first deer with the muzzleloader, it was a last minute hunt that came together great. I got out to the Pequest at about 1230, loaded the gun and was about to head out and a few guys pulled up, we talked for a quick minute letting each other know where the other would be to be safe. Got settled into the tree in my climber about 1:00pm. At about 4:00pm i see movement way way off, so i keep my eye out that way, before i know it i see a lone deer heading my way. After about an eternity this doe makes it out to fifty yards munching on the browse...she was standing quartering too, so i settled the crosshairs right on the front shoulder and squeezed one off. The smoked cleared and i see the mad dash the doe was making, front leg broken so i knew it was a good shot, she was down and expired in less then thirty yards....i could see her laying dead from my stand, took a breathe, calmed myself, loaded the gun (didnt prime it) and lowered the gun to the ground....i took the bloodtrail walk even tho i could see her lying because i wanted to see the bloodtrail from the powerbelts because some have told me that they dont leave a good blood trail...well i couldnt even find one little splattter of blood in any part of the woods, and there was plenty of snow on the ground....but the powerbelts still did their job...it was amazing shooting my first deer with the muzzleloader....wasnt the biggest deer but it still was meat in the freezer and meant alt to me...pictures will come when i get home, they are not the best pictures because i was in a rush to leave for maine on an ice fishing trip....i left for maine once i got finished squaring the deer away...the ice fishing in maine was frigid, it was four below when we got onto the ice, but it warmed up once the sun came up....their werent too many fish to be caught but it was still an amazing time with some amazing fellas....it was also my first time in maine, i am still here now, watching the pats game then heading out to some local huntin shops then headed home...so i will probably post some pics tomorrow...but i just had to tell someone my muzzleloading story, i am still excited about it...i havent had all that much time to hunt this year with college and all, so it was been a great winter break for me...
