I saw on another thread someone mention Rack Shed traps. I'm interested in this. I saw one at racktrap.com that I could build that seems pretty humane as far as not trapping the deer by using rubber bungees. I also read about some wire around a tree methods that sounded like it could be real nasty for the deer if he gets caught up in it. I also read that putting corn under large downed trees can work.

All new to me, but it sounded like a neat project to do with my daughter who, so far, does not like, or is really capable of understanding the idea of hunting. She is mentally disabled, but physically fine and loves to hike in the woods with me on scouting trips and stuff. I thought this might be something we could do together.

Any help appreciated.

i have seen a few different ones, some just a spackle bucket with wire sticks duck tapped to them and that seemed to work fine, search around a lil youll find something, good luck.

That is very cool!

Here's another:

Thanks for the ideas. I'm gonna set out a couple of the traps described. Is now a good time to start or wait a while?

Hate to say it but we went out last march to shed hunt and we jumped a half dozen big racked bucks still holding. Then in April I saw a nice 8 still holding. I think in the poorer habitat like the pines and farther north you may start seeing them shed now but otherwise we have to wait a while.

I've seen some people locate a large fallen tree that is laying on the ground, then they excavate a hole under the main trunk of the tree and pour corn in there. The idea is the buck needs to really stick their head down into the hole and their antlers will press against the trunk of the tree. Neat idea as you aren't leaving wire, bungies or rebar in the woods and no one will ever notice your rack trap!

I have also seen 3 poles hammered into the ground in a triangle, then heavy gauge wire tied to all three at 1 ft off the ground and 2-3ft off the ground to catch the antlers in the wire or at least get them tangled.

I've never tried either one...just read threads over the years...

I think your right it is too early. But gives me time to scout spots, I have a lot fallen large trees. I am also going to fabricate a bungee type shed trap. Maybe I'll post some pics if it works out.

March/April as you said makes sense for seeing results if any. There are some great videos on youtube about using dogs. I have a year old Lab who is a nose hound. I wonder what the traning process is.

i just bought five 10' rebar at home depot.. cost me like $24.. cut them in half already, and will be pounding them in the ground in the center of a thicket about 10" apart and pouring corn in between them tomorrow.. also putting a cam on it to see..

ill keep it baited from now until predator season ends in mid march...

good luck to you and your daughter!

another idea...

Predrill 2 3/4" holes in the side of 2x4 4" from the end.

2 Rebar poles drove into the ground with 1.5' sticking up. Alighn these poles with the holes in the 2x4.

Repeat with another 2x4 set up 1 foot parrell as many times as you want.

Make sure to secure the 2x4s to the poles with wire or bungie cords.

Spread feed all through the set up.

Idea is that the bucks will keep hitting their racks on the 2x4s while getting at the feed.

Cheap and covers a lot of ground at your bait site.

Some good ideas there. So most of you are starting now? Don't consider it too early? I'm working on a setup that will attach to a tree using some metal stock from an old home gym and thick black rubber bungees. I also know some old abandoned farms that have some of those horse feeders that attach to the wall for hay? I was thinking if you cut out every other bar or what is needed and add a feed bucket pan so they need to lean in through the bars to get at the corn. It might work good and will be indestructible, but a bit heavy for a long haul.

I have a bunch of heavy wall PVC type tubing, trying to see how I could use that some way. This is super strong stuff used for high pressure sprinkler systems, not the stuff you buy at home depot. (Yes its fireproof to 1600 degrees) It pounds into the ground easy and I have 1" to 2 1/2 in. dia. with 8'-10' pieces and lots of smaller 4-5' scrap lengths. They are outdated for sprinkler use and I'm trying to figure out something to use them for. Already build a tripod feeder, and a bag target suspension frame. Ideas on making a shed trap with it?
