Anyone on here hunt this area or familiar with how it works. I run my dog there frequently and see multiple signs on where different areas of hunting regulations. There is one area that says part of it is leased to a private hunting club [wallmad], and opposite of those signs it says hunting by permit only. Just wondering if anyone knows about how it works there.

THAT part gets land stewardship work done by it's formr owner in exchange for hunting rights it was part of the purchase agreement he could have sold to a developer. OBTW it is owne by the Hunterdon Land Trust. The other part "Hunting by permit" is owned by Hunterdon County and managed by Parks & Rec. I think you need to be in line a day early to get the few passes they sell for it GOOD LUCK, OBTW most of that land was gifted to the county by Loyd Wescott a very smart far thinking man.

thanks for the info Jakesbeard. That land is beautiful and I love fishing and taking my dog there. I'm not sure that I will ever be hunting there since I will most likely not be in New Jersey any longer after this year. I was just curious because its a possibility for my dad and we both love that area. I was confused though because all of the trail signs say "hunterdon land trust" even through the hunting areas.
I was thinking that they (land trust and county parks) worked in coordination with each other.

talk to 11pointer he is hunting Lockatong with his new cross bow
jokester...i dont even look at bolt guns:D...go to lockatong right up the road and its open to public decent deer in there

us hunterdon boys get the jump on the city slickers
:)

to get my permit i had to get in line at 4am. the trick is to bring a chair and put in line and sleep
Been doing that so long I have gotten good at it.

The Lockatong preserve is leased to a hunting club by the Hunterdon County Land Trust, the members of which are entitled to hunt it. The Lockatong preserve abuts the lower section of the Wescott Preserve, the county sells 7 permits for each season. Not the best hunting ground due the the number of houses, somewhat convoluted layout of the land, roads, streams, etc. The Lockatong is much better.

I am confused as to the difference between the Lockatong and the Lockatong preserve? I thought it was the same thing. The parts of the preserve I am aware of are the parts along the trail that runs next to the river and the woods and mountain side on the other side. I know the trail then heads up the mountain and takes you to a bunch of fields. Are the fields under seperate hunting then the lower creek part?

The Mimi trailhead to the Lockatong Zega preserve is located on Rosemont Raven Rock Road near to Federal Twist in Delaware Township, just off Rt 12. Mimi's trail connects to the Wescott Preserve. In my post, I only compared Wescott and the Lockatong Preserve. You might be confused if you thought I was referring to the Lockatong WMA much furter upstream, beyond Stimples Mill. Hope this helps.

There are upper fields at Wescott and some lower ground near the creek. The Lockatong Preserve is a much larger contiguous block of land than Wescott with easier access than many areas of Wescott, which has some steep ridges and well over a mile of hiking to get out from the bottom. The upper fields are bordered on three sides by homes and roads that limit shooting and at the same time provide respite for deer especially the big estate that seems to feed the pretty deer who love to hang out on their front lawn.

Trust me, parking at the open fields on Stimples Mill and hiking to the lower areas is at least 1.5 miles and requires hiking down a 150 foot ridge. The Lockatong Creek can often be impossible to cross on foot making the parking lot on Rosemont Raven Rock worthless. The Lockatong Preserve being adjacent to Wescott has a parking lot on the good side of the creek and I always see a lot of deer there when hiking. I do not plan to hunt Wescott next year and I hope my comments are take constructively.
