I see red foxes all the time when I hunt in Hunterdon county. I've never seen a fox up in the Southern Tier (just about every other animal though). Coyotes eat them.

Coyotes also eat raccoons and opposums; so their impact on turkeys is not clear cut (raccoons are big turkey poult predators).

Unless they do link these animals with the Eastern Wolf (extinct in the U.S.), then they are invasive. Hunters should shoot them for that reason. Probably too late, but that would be the logical reason to do it.

If anyone on here traps and sells pelts, they should offer to take any coyote a NJ Hunter takes. Maybe donate some of the pelt sale to charity (or the web site). I would think it legal as long as the hunter doesn't get paid for it.

like in the pines where the yotes are starting to outnumber the deer. I can't wait till next week, I hope we push and kill some yotes!!
I know there's a bunch running round chatsworth n Moore's meadow rd.herd'm there last year.1st mornning of 6day it was still dark n they were a howl'n.they came real close, maybe 40yrds.made me a little nervous cause never herd them that close before.wont be that way this year ;) "Let The Bodies Hit The Floor" [smoke][up]

first documented yote kill in nj was 1939 lambertville 2ND documented kill in NJ was 1949 capemay.

call the number after hours if you don't want to talk to anyone and leave a message. sex, wight, color if you like and firearm or trapping with name and phone number

we need to see kills reported or they can't prove we have them and where.

The population isn't large everywhere, like in the pines where the yotes are starting to outnumber the deer. I can't wait till next week, I hope we push and kill some yotes!!
+1 I hunt Zone 24 and the deer population is way down. I was in my stand Monday and Tuesday and heard one shot on Monday and none on Tuesday. I did hear a coyote right after sunset.

2008-09 Deer harvest total 53260.I don't think coyotes killed more deer then that. What is the estimated coyote populatin in nj?
If the yotes equaled our kill rate, deer season would be closed. They do put a big dent in the fawn population each spring. They also hurt turkey populations, especially during breeding season.

What is the estimated coyote populatin in nj?
That I can't answer that, but like the original post in this thread stated
I my self and other hunters that I talk with have noticed the decline in deer in certain area and all signs are poiint to the yoted in the area..
I have noticed the decline of deer in the area that I hunt. I found the remains of 2 coyote kills last winter. There also were turkey in the area, I have not seen any in year or more. I agree that baiting, long seasons and unlimited antlerless tags have contributed to the decline of deer numbers, but I believe the coyotes have put a major hurting on the herd in zone 26 in the past 3 years.
Zone 26 was changed to Deer set 3, which has cut down on the length fall bow, permit bow and shotgun permit seasons, along with a 2 deer limit per season. Time will tell if lower harvest numbers help increase deer numbers.

yotes kill deer period in the pines coyotes numbers are growing i will shoot every coyote i see and i hope other people do too 1 less coyote could equal at the very least one more fawn to make it to adult hood whackem and stackem

jim i wanna see that video lol

Just to be clear I wasn't trying to state that the yotes are the only reason for the deer number decrease.. But in areas there are way to many yotes and the state doesnt seem to see that we have a problem.. The only way for the state to notice that there is a problem in these areas is for any yotes taken to be reported.... I can tell you this in the few areas i can hunt the yotes are doin some real damage... And it makes me mad that i wasnt able to attend the trapping class cause i really wanted to start trappin these boys and not just doin the night hunting yote season

there is dens that a estimated 14 fawn was brought to in the course of a summer. very few adult will be taken by smaller yotes but as the size increase 60 + on yotes there will be some adult take down. key is with the trail cams. June to Sept there should be fawns if your are not seeing them look to see if yotes are there.

I have a friend that I pa deer hunt with. his fawn numbers was down 50 % this last spring and summer. he has 20 to 30 doe on the piece all the time and only shoots bigger bucks, in august he started to see the yote on the cam. I will be calling and setting snares in there in Jan.

Yotes are not native here the wolf was. been gone a long time. the yote is the same as a feral dog just better at it.

In pa this past week there was a lot of coyote sign every pile of droppings had deer hair in it car, hunters or the yote kill the deer I don't know but I did not see any little deer. or tracks.

Plenty of coyote sign in zones 23 and 21.
Fewer deer as well. Not happy about the shorter seasons(muzzleloader)....to me they recognize theres fewer deer but we get punished. If your going to take away hunting time for deer then give us more time to hunt something else....like the yotes.
Or a longer rabbit season.

Thank you. I started hunting in 1970 and learned the ropes from alot of old timers. The word coyote never came up in any conversation. I also went along some of my father's friends who ran foxhounds every week (I am talking like 15 or more hounds at one time). Once again the word coyote was never mentioned. I saw my first coyote in the early 90's.

I won't shoot one because that's just another broadhead I have to clean and sharpen, as well as bring it out the woods in addition to my climber and bow and backpack. I'm maxed out busy right now, don't need even one more small thing to do, especially if it doesn't go in my freezer. And I'm not comfortable shooting anything I don't eat, seems a waste to kill for kills sake.

Real good idea to call; I know from conversations with a few state biologists they report to game council and also judge #’s by reported road kills by police state & municipal[eek].
If you see a bobcat call it in; hope trappers will soon be able to get a ann.bag limit[up]

im loaded with with red fox and coyotes by me, they seem to be good at avoiding m snares though, and 2 night last week i had a gray fox cross the road on my way home from work about a mile from my house, he is also very savy apparently and has not returned down the trail since. hopefully catch some soon.
