I know you cannot carry buckshot and small game shot together but would it be legal to carry #8 shot for small game like squirells and 3 1/2 inch #2 shot for waterfowl? I would guess it would all have to be steel shot.

I am asking because the WMA where i small game hunt has a some wet spots where you can find ducks at times and i have my duck stamp. Just wondering if i could target both at the same time.

You cannot be in possession of lead shot while hunting waterfowl-its against both state and federal law

We can carry blunt tips and judu points for small game while bow hunting deer, but I dont think it is legal to have different ammo....

Actually to be honest if you can only have broadheads in your quiver. As for the ammo I would read your digest or contact a co don't rely on hear say. With regard to arrow tips this is what the digest says. See crossbow safety tips on this page.
All arrows used for hunting deer, turkey, coyote,
fox or woodchuck must be fitted with a wellsharpened
metal head with a minimum width
of ¾ inches.
Arrows fitted with heads other than specified
for deer, turkey, coyote, fox or woodchuck may be
carried in the woods and fields during the small
game season or other seasons which overlap with
the bow and arrow deer season. For the purpose
of discharging a crossbow, hunters may carry judo
points or blunts

The digest specifically states that you cannot carry small game loads while deer hunting but I don't think it really says anything about this kind of situation. Technically, I would think if you are small game hunting and carrying anything bigger than #4 shot you would be in violation. You've also got the non-tox issue with waterfowl. I would ask F&W to be sure but I would say that more than likely the answer would be no.

On top of not being allowed to carry lead shot while waterfowl hunting, you'd need to be wearing hunter orange to do any small game hunting which is not a good idea if you want to waterfowl hunt. You can technically hunt small game and waterfowl together provided you use steel shot AND wear hunter orange, but is is obviously not practical.

It was different back when I grew up in the 70s before steel shot, but the orange thing was always the tough choice as it is required for small game. We used to sometime jump shoot mallards and woodies from small ponds or streams while small game hunting while wearing orange, but it's difficult at best now. Heck, it was tough back then especially having the correct shot size for small game and ducks. Forget about geese...

Yes i know. I stated in my oringal post all the shot would be steel.

If thats the case would it then be legal to harvest duck with #4 and still take game with #8

Thanx good tip. I did this and will post the results when i get them. I couldnt find anything regarding this kind of situation in the digest and no one who i have asked seems to know for sure

Yes good point. I should have stated in the original post that i would be wearing hunter orange and "jump shoot" would be about the extent of the duck hunting in this case. Its just one small spot where you can walk up on them at times. I would not be sitting in cover trying to call.

Wouldn't it be legal (but expensive) to carry non-toxic shells of appropriate size for waterfowl and small game.

Let's say you are jumping ducks, keep the orange off of you. Since your ammo is legal, what is the problem?

Then, if you should decide to hunt small game, put the orange on and switch to smaller size.

Reading the digest, I can't see anything wrong with this but would be interested to hear if I am wrong.

its going to be illegal either way. if you are carrying lead while fowlin you are in violation...if you are fowl hunting and wanna shoot small game you MUST have 200 sq in of BLAZE HUNTER ORANGE on..ducks dont like orange [hihi]

if you are carrying any kind of small game loads in the woods you must wear orange no if ands or buts about it

If all shells are non-tox and #4 shot and smaller, there is nothing that keeps you from using non tox on upland game. As long as you are wearing orange.

I think this is the correct answer. They sure don't make the regs easy, do they? I've been back and forth between NJ regs and the federal waterfowl regs and still don't see anything definitive, but this looks correct. Non-toxic shot size 4 or larger and 200+ inches of blaze orange (plus all necessary permits obviously) to do both legally.
