You have been reading to way to much anti hunting propaganda...
Whitetail deer thrive in any natural enviroment where they are not hunted by humans. In fact they have little fear of humans when they live in very close proximity to people.
As far as the genes, no they don't have any unusual genes...this is simply what mature bucks look like in the northeast...
