Well? how do I start? I got to my spot at about 5 A.M. I decided to walk around very slowly just listening to see if I can find a roosted bird, I was unable to put any to bed as I went back to work on Tuesday. right at 6 A.M I hear a gobble, sounded kinda far away, I owl hooted and then two gobbles came back but this time they were close!!
I set up by a tree and gave a few soft yelps and right away two birds gobbled back!! But with all the hills and ridges I had no Idea how far they where away! the sounded close though, I waited about 5 minutes and yelped again, GOBBLE,GOBBLE,GOBBLE!!! it was so loud that I thought it was in my lap!! but as yet I still don't see it!! I kept calling and he kept gobbleing,
walking from left to right and back again. but still I can't see it!! every time he gobbled I looked in that direction only to see nothing!!! I was going nuts!! By the way it sounded he should be only 5-10 yards away?! but still nada, don't see him.
I gave it 10 min. then I moved up the ridge a bit to get on a level with the turkey. I knelt down by a tree and a large bolder, I gave a yelp with a mouth call, GOBBLE,GOBBLE!!! so loud it almost blew my hat off!!!..............Still don't see it though.[wallmad] The cover was not overly thick but there are lots of little dips and rises.
So I let the bird settle and tried to move to the lft a little to clear out a little rise, he must have seen me move as when I called I got nothing.
I called again useing a slate and got a fadeing gobble. That bird was fired up!! sounded like he was in my lap! and I never saw it![cry][wallmad][wallmad]
Later in the day I was walking and broad casting to see if I can raise a bird. About 10 as I was crossing a power line right of way I hear a faint gobble comeing from down hill of me, I respond and it gobbles back, I want to set up over the crest of the hill so I can see him as he comes up, he souds like he's still a few hundred yards out right? WRONG!!! as I crested the hill he was stareing right at me only 10 feet away!!! wheres my gun you say?
Slung over my shoulder where else?[wallmad] off he goes takeing another tom with him!!
so ends my day, but I'll be at the spot I first encounterd them next saturday and I know another way to get to them so I can see them next time.
