Traditional Archery......

Well, Im bored out of my mind right now, so I figured Id post my thoughts.

I've decided that this is going to be THE year! I will try to harvest at least one deer with my old hand me down recurve this year. I havent been sufficent enough with it in the past to take it hunting. There was a time when I was shooting it everyday, and hitting swinging coke cans at 25 yards, but that was with a release aid...barebow, but it felt like cheating when using a release. Ive been practicing on and off for a few years now, and with all this practice Im getting better. Im now confident I could make a perfect hit if its within about 15 yards. Thats what bowhunting is all about anyway, getting close, so that will make it all the more fun.

I will try to take it out early season. If I took it out after I take my earn-a-buck doe, Id probably see the biggest buck of my life parading around at 20 yards snickering at me.
:D Like they dont know...Im convinced those deer have a sense of humor!

Wish me luck, Im gonna need it!---Matt:)

Good luck Matty with the recurve. I'm hoping to get my first kill with a long bow myself. I had bad luck last year with traditional bows, 2 of which broke on me.
If you could hit a moving small target at 25yds, WHY did you use a compound?[smirk]
Matty, I thought you were coming over for lunch this week? If I pick up my hay bails today from "Bum Hunt"... bring your bow.

Cause I was using a release aid with a recurve, it just didnt seem right.:( I felt like Byron Fergusson though...it was pretty fun. Not that I could shoot aspirins or anything, but it was neat with no sights.

I was testing different arrows out of the recurve this morning, and I may actually go back to some old aluminums I have. Im also gonna get magnus 125 3 blades for it. Shoot it with them a bunch and see if Im still good. Even if I could shoot it out to 20-25 accurately, I dont think I would, its only pulling about 38# at my draw. 15 yards seems to be a good limit.

Dont think Im leaving behind the technology though. I cant give up the compounds, I have a real love for them.[up]

Drag, if I can get my wipers fixed today, I will stop by tomorrow or whenever is good for you. Let me know when you get the haybales, and I will bring the old recurve by. I'll email you later, or you email me.....Im going to work on the truck soon.

Have a good one---Matt

Oh and thanks for the luck MG, hope you have some good luck with the longbow this year!

i took the recurve out last year..some guy let me use his old one he had laying around. i missed 4 deer with it (no bucks luckily) then i bought a GOOD one and went out the last day of winter bow and shot a button buck...ive been practicing up to 40 yards with it...its REALLY not THAT hard..if you practice.[up]
Can't wait till deer season to start..... Been shooting everyday since I got my long bow, Now all we need is a Archery Bear Season.

Also getting a kit to make my own bow later this year, A flatbow / Algonkian Indian style bow.

An archery bear season, man I wish! I know the UBNJ is working on it, but that seems like it will be impossible to get. But, never say never, right? Even if they just let you use a bow during the 6-day bear season. Id be in heaven!

Good luck making that bow MG![up] After I take an animal with this old recurve, thats something I want to eventually do too; Make my own bow, and harvest an animal with it. What a sense of pride that must be, the simpler and more like our ancestors you get, the more exciting it becomes. Some day I will be running around in a loin cloth with a spear!:D Lets just hope no one sees me!;)

Probably not something you should be admitting to in an open forum. Infact, I think I can hear the padded truck coming for you now! They're coming to take me away, ho ho, theyre coming to take me away hee hee. Hee hee ho ho, hee hee, HAA HAA!!:p:D

Funny though, very funny!:D Just as long as I dont get a visual picture in my head that is.:p :D

Hey it never stopped the Assyrians. The mechanical release goes back two thousand years. I met a guy that shoots one with a 'thumb ring'.
Matty you can use a release aid, but I would put a string loop on it and put some limbsavers on the bow. The release will make lots of noise, more then fingers.
