The sight of a bear can stop traffic
Friday, October 21, 2005
Motorists who somehow managed to keep their vehicles within the speed limit on the straight flat section of Route 94 in Knowlton on Tuesday caught a glimpse of a huge black bear meandering through a cornfield.

That, of course, isn't really news anymore. Bears are everywhere, it seems. Nevertheless, they've yet to become as common a sight as other creatures, even in New Jersey's so-called "bear country."

The drivers who spotted the bruin -- those who weren't nervously scanning for the local constables lurking this speedway -- hit their brakes. Some stopped and parked on the shoulder to watch the big mammal's nonchalant movement to the southeast.

A LONG time ago (early 70's) my grandparents (from Manhattan) used to rent a cottage on Budd Lake for the whole summer...one time (must've been '74 or '75), we came upon an accident -- a guy on a motorcycle had hit a bear on Rt. 206 in Chester.

Bears were much rarer in NJ then, so traffic was really screwed up (as were both the guy and the bear)! Being 6 or 7, it was the first bear I'd ever seen not in a zoo or on TV...
