Earlier this year, the folks at the New Jersey Network caved in to a small but vocal group of animal activists and canceled a documentary on the conflicts between people and bears here in New Jersey.

NJ is a one of a kind place!

Virtually everyone I know from outside New Jersey thinks we are insane to permit the state that has the densest human population to also have the densest bear population. Only a minority of animal lovers thinks otherwise. But they have a hugely disproportionate hold on our public officials.

The latest maneuver by this crowd is the effort to get everyone in bear country -- which seems to be rapidly expanding to include all 21 New Jersey counties -- to start using bear-proof garbage cans. The theory is that if the bears can't get into garbage they'll go back into the woods. But what will they eat once they get there?
