Hunting and Fishing: The bear facts don't always add up
Friday, November 11, 2005
For the Star-Ledger
Opponents of bear hunting in New Jersey were shocked and dismayed on Dec. 9, 2003, when it looked as though a hunter had shot a cub and left it to die in view of rush-hour traffic on Route 23 in Sussex County.

It was a story picked up by media around the world: Horrified commuters got a first-hand look at the cruelty of bear hunting as a 65-pound, mortally-wounded bruin slowly expired in the cold, blood-soaked snow.

The people who unsuccessfully fought the hunt were probably truly shocked. They could also have been genuinely dismayed. But might there have been a bit of satisfaction in the air?
