Ahhh, shoot. No I mean literally. Saturday morning at 8:30am I see two does, one full size and one fawn, straight ahead of me ~ 50 yards out. They are slowly walking, stopping, and eating. They manage their way in, and the whole time, they are behind some sort of cover, or out of range. They make their way in and to my left. They get behind some brush ~ 20 yards ahead of me, and I slowly draw my bow back. Just as they start to get into my clear lane, they pick up the pace and quickly walk to my left. Since I haven't ever tried to do the stop'em and shoot technique, I let them walk figuring they'll stop shortly. NOPE! They walked their butts out of range.

Ok, for you veteran bow hunters, I know in theory how to get them to stop. But, I know that once to call them, you'll have to take the shot pretty quickly. Does anyone have any method to practice such a shot? How would you do this? And how much time do you have to take the shot after calling?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
David

First, I am not a veteran.

Last year I used the "stop'em, then shoot'em" technique during the 6-day with my shotgun/slug.

A doe came trotting down the middle of a corn field... she got about 40 yards away from me and I yelled "Hey. Yo. Over here."

She stopped, frooze, and looked around. I put the gun up... took my time... squeezed the trigger.. bang.

Dead deer.

I either whistle or make a duck quack sound. Not to loud. But if they don't stop I get a little louder. I've killed many deer stopping them this way. You usually have a few seconds to get the shot off .

"Hey. Yo. Over here."
Do not try to use this words. It is very offensive to the deer's. Kris is given you bad advice here. Take it from a professional hunter. The best words to use is " STOP POLICE DO NOT MOVE" it works all the time:D:D:D

Dan,

Not a problem. Thanks for the help. I went to Sportsman's Center, and they dialed it back in. They made a small tweak with the strings, and adjusted my centershot. I took it upstairs and shot at their indoor range. My last set of shots, I had 4 arrows within a 1-1/4" diameter.

Thanks again,
David

Sounds like you are good to go. Still, if you get the time, I am sure Matty could go through it with you on how to DIY. I could as well, but I beleive that Matty is better at it than I am.

I usually draw then make a sound like a baby lamb, maa. Then when they stop behind a tree I wait till they move again and try again till they run out of trees to hide behind.:) When I get really nervous and can't think, I just follow Kris' lead wth a Yo.

I like to use the Maa or Blaa sound because if they stop in the wrong spot you can usually get away with doing it 2 or 3 times b4 they spook. Also it doesnt usually spoke other deer thay my be there. Start low and go louder untill they hear it..But if the buck is chasing a doe past you may need to be more vocal with a hoot or 2....Good luck

With the exception of the "Yo over here" comment, I've heard/seen all of them on TV. I guess the only way to see how it works is to actually try it.

We'll see...
