I had to fly solo this morning as my fater had to work and my other good turkey hunting buddy was in a different zone with his brother. Got into the woods and set up late, (was settled at 5:37 AM) but was confident that the birds would be roosted on the ridge above me a good distance away. A short while later it was like I was at a music concert. I heard Toms gobbling from every direction, there had to be at least 5. I did some tree talking/purring for a while just to let them know where I was. That went on for an hour and included them flying down and being extremely vocal on the ground. Then, after watching a hen come and go, I finally had one of the gobblers make and appearance. However, I had been looking up the hill for a bird that had been answering me. While doing that, my bird came in quiet from a different direction almost straight ahead of the way I was facing. The 1st thing that caught my attention was the awesome rope he had swinging back and forth as he walked towards me.I was able to slowing put my call down and pick up my gun that was across my lap. I then was able to get set up for the shot and turn off the safety while he stood behind a small tree. He saw my decoy, but did not strut or gobble once he was in close. After he stepped out from behind the previously mentioned tree, I let him have it at 33 yards w/ a 3 1/2 inch turkey supreme. Needless to say he didn't go far and he expired quickly. It was 6:45 AM when I took him and there were other birds gobbling in the distance at the time. It was truly an amazing morning that I won't soon forget.
His particulars were as follows:
He was a shade under 20 lbs and came in at 19 3/4, 3/4 inch spurs on both sides and a
10 3/8 inch beard. According to my father, he scored 55.5 on the NWTF calcualtor.
Sorry the pictures aren't the best, but as I said I didn't have anybody with me in the woods to get nice shots. A special thanks to my dad (highguy) for letting me hunt his spot and for his tireless scouting prior to the season. Wish you could have been there with me today pop!
