Scaup population is steadily diving
Tuesday, August 30, 2005
BY FRED J. AUN
For the Star-Ledger
Waterfowl populations rise and fall in cycles, so biologists are cautious about sounding alarms. Scientists wave red flags only after long-term bird surveys show a species is declining steadily with no sign of cyclical rebound.

Although the nation's scaup population numbers began heading downward in the mid-1980s, it wasn't until the late 1990s when waterfowl experts agreed the diving ducks, also called bluebills and broadbills, were definitely in trouble.
