An off-duty Mendham police officer who was seriously injured when the motorcycle he was riding crashed in Blairstown on Sunday remains in critical but stable condition, police said today.

Police also released the name of the injured 46-year-old officer, which was being withheld on Monday until his two children were notified of the accident.

The officer, Sgt. Pasquale Libertino, is a 22-year veteran of the department, a borough DARE officer and an experienced motorcyclist, Mendham Police Chief John Taylor said.

Libertino, a resident of the Flanders section of Mount Olive, suffered internal injuries and broken bones in the crash and is unconscious because of medication he was given. He is in the intensive care unit of Morristown Memorial Hospital.

Blairstown police and the Blairstown Ambulance Corps responded to a report of a motorcycle crash with injuries on Hope Road at 6:20 p.m. Sunday. The accident was called in by a passing motorist who did not witness the crash, and police have not been able to find anyone who saw the accident.

Blairstown police said Libertino was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound on Hope Road in the area of Hillview Lane, near mile marker 5. As the motorcycle approached a tight left turn, Libertino laid the bike down, letting it fall to the left side and slide into the guard rail. Police do not believe speed was a factor.

The section of the Warren County road where the crash occurred is one lane in each direction, with the lanes separated by a grass median. The speed limit is 45 mph. Blairstown police said Libertino was wearing a helmet.

Libertino was taken by the State Police NorthSTAR medevac helicopter, which landed at the Mohican Road fire station about 2-1/2 miles away, to Morristown Memorial Hospital.

The State Police Fatal Accident Investigation Unit was called to assist with the investigation.
