We are sad to report the passing of Division volunteer Bill Carman of Pompton Lakes who died on August 15 at the age of 78. Bill began volunteering more than 30 years ago and had donated over 38,000 hours to our agency. Committed to helping out wherever assistance was needed, he had volunteered for virtually every section of the Division. Before the hunter education records were kept on the computer, Bill was the sole person that looked up every individual request for duplicate. Those who know and worked with Bill will remember his stern (a true Marine), but good-natured demeanor and unwavering willingness to work. Clearly, his most passionate focus was assisting with fishing education classes at Pequest where his enthusiasm for getting youngsters and adults "hooked on fishing" was most obvious. It is not often that an organization can claim such a dynamic volunteer as Bill, who day in and day out demonstrated a work ethic that remains a testament to dedication and an inspiration to us all. A true character like Bill can never be replaced and could never be forgotten.

A lifelong outdoors man and staunch conservationist, Bill was devoted to the state's natural resources and was a member of several conservation organizations including the Knee Deep Hunting and Fishing Club of Lake Hopatcong where he had been a member and former vice president since 1954. He was also a charter member of the New Jersey Wild Turkey Federation as well as a member of Trout Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and the Hamptonburg Rod and Gun Club in Orange County, New York.

Viewing hours will be held Wednesday, August 19 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Moore's Home for Funerals, 1591 Alps Road at Hamburg Turnpike in Wayne (tel. 973-694-0072). The funeral service is scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. at Moore's with internment in the Laurel Grove Memorial Park in Totowa. See http://mooreshomeforfunerals.com/ for more information.
