The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife today announced the Governor's signing of Assembly Bill #3022 into law, which authorizes the use of baiting statewide while deer hunting. Prior to the signing of this legislation, baiting had been approved for an 18-month trial period.

This new law will assist hunters in better controlling deer throughout the state and help to reduce deer-related damage to crops and landscaping. Hunters may now permanently use bait in the form of agricultural products, salt or other edible lures while hunting white-tailed deer in New Jersey. Individuals may hunt from blinds, elevated stands or other structures and may be any distance from a baited area.

Not so. It was only illegal to hunt over bait. You could bait an area, and set up on the trails leading to the bait-you just couldn't hunt over it

Baiting is a funny thing with both hunters and antis sometimes. Lots of states do not allow hunters to hunt over a bait pile, but are fine with them hunting over something like standing corn. Isn't that a bait pile (or a pile of bait?)

Dude you could lets say take a pile of corn in lets say the pinebarrens where i hunt and walk back 300 ft take a seat and harvest a deer coming in to it thats the way it was. never did it but could have if wanted to

Standing corn is not the same as a pile of corn.I dont think a deer can hide in a bait pile like it could in standing corn.Its a touch harder to hunt deer over A standing corn field.

baiting is allowed for deer hunting. hunter may hunt for deer while on the ground, in a tree or from a structure at any height and any distance from the bait pile. hunters should check with the land owner if private land or administrative agency before placing bait on there hunting area as baiting is not allowed on properties such as national wild life refuges. page 29 under baiting!!!!!

Prior to the signing of Assembly Bill #3022 into law in 99 you could bait but could not hunt from an elevated position within 100 yards of the bait. If you hunted on the ground you could sit as close as you wanted.

This is from 1972 and as far as I can remember the regulation for baiting remained the same until 1999.
