Cowboy loads are loaded to relatively low velocities reflecting the velocity possible at the time of the cowboy era. The Single action shooting society has a velocity maximum of 1000 feet per second for handguns and 1400 feet per second for rifles. Cowboy action shooting values speed as well as accuracy. Hence most shooters like to use very low speed rounds. The full 357 round will put a 125 grain bullet at 1200 to 1400 feet per second out of a handgun depending on barrel length. Cowboy action shooting loads average 650-800 feet per second.
