My wife bought me a Sony HDR-FX7 for fathersday . I thought I read some where that you should not watch your footage on the camera. Something about it is bad for the heads. Is this true ?

Yes and also it erases footage if you use the camera for playback happens all the time on my Sony VX2100

buy a cheap Walmart camera to use as a capture deck. i do not use my primary camera for anything except Record. rewind and playback is on a cheap camera

Good luck with a very nice camera. The answer to your question is can or should you use your camera for playback? Of course you can. What these guys are recommending which is correct is that in order to save putting unnecessary hours on you camera head it is always best to have another source to review, log, and play your tapes. Unless you are planning to do lots of this kind of work, at least for the short term you can use your camera for play back and log and capture if you are going to do any editing. If you find that you are really getting into it. I too suggest you pick up another playback source so you don't put the extra hours on your camera head.
