Healy took it to the supreme court after the appeals court ruled it to interfere with state law and that Jersey City had overstepped thier boundries. This is really bad that they are even considering this. It should be cut and dry that state law supercede's any local ordinance.

An appeals court last fall overturned the 2006 ordinance, saying the city had overstepped its bounds because state law already monitors those sales.

Brian Miller, executive director of Ceasefire New Jersey, is involved in both the case before the court and the effort for a statewide law. He said the bill only applies to handguns and would not hurt hunters or collectors -- who could still make multiple purchases.

"You can't hunt with a handgun in New Jersey. It's against the law, thankfully," Miller said.
