TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- It might cost Garden State residents more to hit the highway on a motorcycle.

New Jersey's Motor Vehicle Commission has proposed dozens of fee increases and the public has until Saturday to comment.

Motorcycle registration would cost $65 instead of $10. Motorists would have to pay $150 for the driver improvement program instead of $100. Even the cost of boat-registration applications would go up.

MVC officials say many of the fees have stayed the same for years and don't cover the related administrative costs.

The commission's board will vote on the hikes on May 26.

I though I heard on the News that they were proposing a $250 registration SURCHARGE on SUV's that are 5000 pounds.

I wonder if this is happening. If so, you'll start seeing a lot of SOCCOR MOMS start driving the compact ones.

Could be a good thing...........

Let's see...

Late for the game

Vehicle FULL of screaming kids

Putting make up on

Talking on the cell phone

and thinking about what to get at the store

All while driving a FULL SIZE Excursion............

Come on, we've all seen it........... :D

It seems prices are rising on everything these days—and N.J. Motor Vehicle Commission fees may be the next to increase by 50 percent or higher.

You may pay higher fees for things like motorcycle registrations and commercial-driver exams by July 2009.

Some proposed hikes are:

From $35 for commercial driver license exams to $125
From $10 per year for motorcycle registrations to $65 per year
From $4 to $10 for document copies to $15
From $100 for driver improvement programs to $150
From $20 to $30 for boat ownership certificates to $60

The proposed hikes will help cover the motor vehicle agency’s deficit of $27 million by better reflecting the commission’s cost for processing the transactions, according to MVC chief administrator Sharon Harrington.

For instance, the MVC estimates to issue a commercial driver license costs them $437, which may explain the proposed fee increase from $35 currently to $125.

Fees would not increase for driver’s licenses or car registrations

From $10 per year for motorcycle registrations to $65 per year
Ouch ! I've got 4 of them !!

The only reason they will raise these rates is because we have to pay them, just like tolls and auto insurance. As far as the big SUV's, anything they can call a politically correct sin will be open for an ever increasing "sin tax", just like cigarettes, so it will encourage people to buy more efficient cars.[eyeroll] Don't be surprised if ammo falls into that category someday. I don't buy anything Trenton says.

They should make it;

$10 per year for a motorcycle with mufflers.
$650 per year for a motorcycle with straight pipes.
$600 if it idles without cracking the throttle every 5 seconds.[ko]

Then we would see how many riders stick by their contention that straight pipes save lives. Rt. 23 is in my backyard and believe me, so does driving your motorcycle like a human being.

Was rt 23 there when you bought the house??
Yup, but it was 2 lanes back then with a grass median and you could cross it with your eyes closed and probably not get hit. And, Harley Davidson was made by AMF so bikers were too busy fixing their bikes most of the summer.[hihi]
