Seems kind of low for opening day considering the weather was perfect. It will be hard to surp [no swearing please] last year's dismal harvest of 7,895 with that kind of opener.
Figure that 35% of bucks get taken on opening day, that would put season total somewhere around 6500.

Last years dismal harvest during gun season seemed to be the result of bad weather, but maybe not. If you look at the previous season, it was a big deer harvest, so maybe there really are just fewer deer available now. The state has been aiming to reduce the herd in about 70 percent of the deer range, so it should be no surprise that the numbers are lower...looks like they are getting what they wanted.

Just want to add that in 2003 5,108 antlered bucks were taken on opening day with a season total of over 12,000 bucks. Anyone see a trend here? Last year the weather was blamed for the pathetic harvest. This year the weather was perfect. Could it be just maybe that there are waaay less deer out there. I think the #'s speak for themselves.
How low the state wants to cut the herd down to is the question I'd like answered. I'd say that since 2000 the herd must be down at least 50%

Hey Drag, does your source have the numbers for fall bow season? Just wondering how they stack up. If the bow numbers are high, bowhunters will be blamed for the low gun harvest...happens that way all the time.

Might have been ok for me but was unable to get out for gun yet due to knee and leg problem. As the story goes one of our club members got a 16" 8 pt off or near my perch when he went in to look to see if I was there. I'm trying to confirm it to see if the story was reliable.I guess I should have been there. Zone 11. We still have plenty of deer around yet.

I'm surprised there haven't been more comments on this thread considering this was the lowest buck kill for an opening day in 30 years.
