Hello Everyone,

I am new to bow hunting and I wondered if someone can help me find a place to hunt. I am not asking for your spot but I live in Mercer County and I have tried some places like Assunpink because it is public. I was thinking of doing some scouting soon in Colliers Mills. I really want to get a deer this year of any size. I didn't even see one in Winter Bow. I had a ground blind and I only hunted for 3 days. Any help would be nice.

I think you are are the right track already to be honest. I know guys that kill deer every year in Assumpink, and C-Mills. You really just have to put your time in, and scout. Look for runs, beds, food sources, ect.. People tend to shy away from public hunting areas, but there's some great hunting available on public land if you just put your time in. Good luck.

Right now is a good time to get out and look at all the sign that was left last season. With things greening up it won't be long before a lot of that sign is hard to see. As to the ground blind if you are using a commercial blind and didn't leave it out for a while to let the deer get used to it, often they will stay away from it. Anything new in their environment takes a bit to get used to. Brushing in the blind well will help in that it will draw less attention. Unfortunately you can't leave stuff on public land (or in many cases even on private) without it getting stolen so using blinds can be a challenge.

The 3 most important factors to bowhunting success are: 1. Location, 2. Location, and 3. Location. Take the time now to find a good spot or 3 for next year.

Late winter is one of the best times to scout. Check out lots of different properties, don't spend too much time overanalyzing just one spot. Avoid public hunting lands that stock pheasant or that have easy access, they will be hunted hard. Look into any local management hunts through UBNJ, county parks, towns, etc.

And it never hurts to knock on a few doors. You might be surprised at the results.
