Hello, I just cross-posted in the hunting preserve forum.

New to NJ from NYC, although grew up bird hunting in the west. With more open space and easier ability to own a gun, I'm going to return to my roots!

First, I have moved to Morristown and want a gun shipped from home. Does anyone know whether you need a firearms permit for a shotgun in Morristown?

Second, I figure the best thing to do is get involved in a couple of preserves to practice and get out. Mostly looking for quail, pheasants, huns, etc. Any tips on preserves not too far from Morris County are appreciated. No dog, as I'm still in an apt. As soon as I get a yard, I'm getting a puppy though.

Third, so glad to have found the site! Didn't know where to begin figuring out the rules around here. Appreciate all input.

Welcome Magoo,

As far as the gun-shipping - you may need an FFL holder to receive the firearm for you. NJ requires an FID card to Purchase firearms. There is no permit required in NJ to posses a shotgun or rifle, although some of our members in law enforcement may point out particularities. An FID card is a good thing to have in the event you want to purchase a new or used firearm from an FFL.

As far as preserves - there are several gun club links on this site as well as the link to NJ F&W. There are several semi-wild preserves in the state.

You will need a NJ hunting liscence. If you have proof of hunter safety training from your prior state of residence, it may be sufficient to apply to F&W for a NJ liscence. If not - you will have to take a hunter safety course prior to obtaining a NJ liscence. The folks here can help you get started.

Good Hunting! Paul

welcome Magoo: As long as you have another hunting license from another state you will be OK. The firearm OH WELL welcome to the REPUBLIC OF NEW JERSEY. You need like 930 stated a purchasers permit. Once you have that you are going to have to find a shop with a FFL license and ship the weapons to them and you then pay a fee and pick them up.
You mention that you lived in NY. Can you pick them up yourself??? if you can you can transport them across state line, as long as you follow the interstate transportation of firearms. In another word, just make sure they are not loaded and they are in a case in the trunk of your car, and there are no bullets or shells for the weapons near them.

El Jefe, so I'll need a purchaser's permit to pick up an already owned shotgun from a shop with a FFL? Odd, but okay. Easier than the process to own a shotgun in NYC. The gun is out west so will need to be shipped.

Pla930, I'll try to find my hunter's safety card from a cl [no swearing please] I took 25 years ago! I've had plenty of licenses in my day, but don't think I have one on me.

Sean, you know Gary. He's from Franklin Lakes. I thought of trying there, but also seemed expensive. He raises GSP's doesn't he?
