Depends on the kid and the training.

My kid really likes his HR 20 ga slug gun. No recoil and it is accurate. Just a bit heavy when stalking a long distance but he does not complain

He also uses a variety of semi-auto shotguns, 30-06 rifles, Muzzy, 357 magnum, 10mm, 22 LR, and his most important....airsoft.

Lightfields outta it. 7/8 ounce 2 3/4 no recoil just have a rest I learned with a single shot great gun goodluck

depends on the gun itself..you will get mixed responses...alot shoot lightfields..they shot like junk out of mine...Hornady SST's were better but Remington Accutip's were the best...I sighted mine in and its been a safe queen for two years, been too busy bowhunting

If he's got some coin, get the savage they're true tack drivers. If you're concerned about his safety only give him one slug at a time (he'll learn to be accurate too) I wouldn't trade mine for any other slug gun out there!!!

I like follow up shots, I like a pump or semi better than anything, just as accurate and you can get more lead on target faster, you cant go wrong. 20ga. 870 with a low power scope. kill em all day long[up]

I started with an h & r when I was 12. I still use it today. I would highly recommend it for him

I got my son an H&R for his 10th birthday. 20 gauge with a 4 power Nikon scope.
