Hiking the Appalachian Trail in the Water Gap Friday pm we saw a strange looking critter cross the trail in front of us near Sunfish Pond that looked like a large black squirrel, but with a bigger bushier tail. Went on Google and searched images of Minks, and thats for sure what it looked like we saw. Anybody else see anything like this in northern NJ ?

Just saw two in upstate PA last week and the first one I saw was only for a second and that is exactly what I thought. It was the first one I had ever seen. The second one I saw for at least a minute running around in the woods and it was definetely the same animal as the first one. Long, black and bushy tailed. Moves just like a squirrel but more articulated. Sounds like you saw a mink.[up]

Gobblergetter could probably tell you a whole lot more about NJ Minks, but yes, I have seen them a few times while in the woods.

There are alot of Mink around that area and N.J in general.
But as ducati indicated...It could very well have been a Fisher, and if it was, then Fish and Wildlife should be notified.
Do a Google search of Fisher and clearify it.
