I would NOT buy a hand grinder; I was not impressed with the way they work.
On the other hand, if your wife has one of those Kitchen Aid stand mixers with the open bowl (or if you want to be a nice guy and get her one for Christmas...)...the sell a grinding attachment for the end of the power unit.[up][up]...and that is one powerful electic motor.
now if I could only post pics of the darned thing.
I just looked: Retail (which is BS) for the mixer is about $250, grinder is about $64 more. I bought the mixer w/ deluxe kit about 4 years ago for my (now) ex wife, it was $150 at Kohls, if this helps. Check the Sunday papers.
The Kitchen Aid does work well, but is small and slow. If your gonna do more than 10lbs., I'd try and find a butcher that will do it for you.
Also, keep the meat semi frozen and it will grind a lot better, as it warms up, it will start clogging the grinder.
