·I wanted to get a back up climber in case something happen to the one I have, and I was looking at the Summitts, then on bassproshop.com saw the same API that I have on sale for $150 so I jumped on it, also ordered the padded footrest

To many moving parts on the API's. I have one. I love the summit line. i have the bushmaster. awesome stand.

i used to love my api. but since i got the summit, there's not even a comparison anymore, in my opinion.

I've been looking at the new Lonewolf alpha climber. It really looks like a great climber, the reviews on it are excellent as well and it only weighs 14.5 lbs.

I have a few of the summits...they are TOO comfortable and encourage naps. They are otherwise great stands, and make sitting all day a piece of cake.

Hey guys. While on the topic of climbers I have a couple of questions. Im looking to get one for 6 day and for permit season in Jan and Feb. I have no knowledge on tree stands what so ever. Im kind of looking at the Summit Viper or Goliath based on reviews and that Ill be going past Cabelas at the end of the month. Now, how simple are climbers to setup and how long does it take to get up a tree, and once up there do you need to anchor the stand? I dont know anyone that hunts from a treestand or I would have asked them. Thanks for shedding any light on my questions.

I have the Viper, and it's good for gun hunting. You should feel very safe if you go high due to the bar in front. The Viper sets up easy, and climbs pretty quietly and easily. It is very comfortable. Just remember, with climbers you are limited to which trees you can use, if you drop something, you have to work back down the tree to get it, then back up. They are more bulky and heavier than the good aluminum hang-on stands and probably a little noisier to set up.
Practice with it before you hunt with it...the time to discover the little things that you need to know to master the stand is not in the pre-dawn darkness.
In my opinion, the best stand for the mobile hunter is one of the aluminum Gorilla's. They are light, easy to set up, very quiet, and I can actually set them up quicker and more quietly than I can get up a tree with my climbers. They are easier to carry around (I use them with screw-in steps), especially if your going deep in the woods, if you drop something (like I'm prone to doing
) you can just climb back down the steps, get it and be back in the stand in less than a minute, no sweat. Just be aware that in some places, you can't use screw in steps, and that may mean carrying in ladder sections, or climbing sticks. If that's the case, the benefits are reduced and a climber may be a better option. I hunt some public lands, which I why I needed a climber.
