Deer season is now underway, but good racks aren't around just yet
New Jersey bowhunters swatted mosquitoes, aimed on shooting lanes through leaves and had a warm opening for their deer season Saturday in most of the state.

It was a typical first day that was cool in the morning and heated up later -- a lot different from the last day of bowhunting for deer that will end on Feb. 18 in some deer management zones. With the antlered buck kill down in last year's seasons and three-point-on-one-side requirements in many areas, there should be some fine racks this year. But not Saturday.

A new concoction, described by the state as "another promising fertility agent," has been approved for more deer experiments at the two sites. People who rail against using lab animals for experiments don't seem to mind when deer are used for research.
