There are plenty of bears for the seasons that start Monday in Pennsylvania and New York and a week from Monday in New Jersey.

There's no question about the seasons in neighboring states, and a good chance we will hunt them in New Jersey unless a lawsuit can prevent us, something the anti-hunters couldn't do in 2003 suits. Hunters and Pennsylvania bear experts are hoping to bag 2,500-3,000 out of that state's estimated 30,000 bears, and possibly even make a kill better than the record 3,075 set in 2000.

Bear hunting in New York's Catskills last year took 257 bears out of an estimated 8,000-10,000 bears statewide, motor vehicles took 50-some out of New Jersey's estimated 3,200 bear population in 2004, and New York's total could go up because more bears are expected to be awake. If 5,000 of us get to hunt Garden State bears this year, a harvest of 300-500 could reduce damage complaints as it did in the year after our 2003 hunt because it will make more bears aware that we're not simply a food source.

Photos of hunters with some beautiful bucks dead and alive (via trail cameras) were on the newjerseyhunter.com website last week, especially a long-tined eight-pointer bagged at Round Valley, and a big one walking around down in Monmouth.

The site has a variety of topics, click on "hunting" in the left margin, then "New Jersey hunting" will appear in a box in the upper right and you can scroll down to find them; the site also has some fishing information, like muskies are biting now.

The Courier News version:

Jim Stabile: If you can't wait, leave the state to hunt bears

It's over the river and up to the woods for New Jerseyans joining Pennsylvanians and New Yorkers in opening bear seasons Monday.

We'll have to wait until a week from Monday for a shot at our homegrown bears, estimated at 3,200 and reproducing at about 500 cubs every January. There are plenty of bears in all three states.

Pennsylvania's season annually accounts for an average of 30 bears weighing more than 500 pounds, including six weighing more than 800 pounds, and the record 834-pounder was taken last Nov. 23 in Monroe County, right across the Delaware from our state. With any bear kill, it helps to have friends, especially with a quad, to get it out of the woods.
Man I hope I find out how hard it is to get one of them out of the woods next week!!!![up]
