My neighbor just asked me. Seems his son's friend (juvenile) got charged with "posession of an airsoft BB gun." Note the distinction...airsoft is airsoft,BB is BB, but the charge for this kid is an apparent violation of NJ law re: BB guns.

Any idea on this?

What was he doing with it?
1st of all a "bb" gun is a firearm in the state of New Jersey.
2nd he was most likely charged with Possession of a Weapon and on the complaint it specified the airsoft bb gun.
Anything can be considered a weapon if it has the potential to cause bodily harm. I am assuming that the airsoft "bb" gun is one of those guns that shoots small plastic balls. If they are I believe they are not considered firearms because you can buy them off the shelves in Dick's.

In short, a "BB" gun is a firearm.

JB...These guns SHOULD NOT be sold or available to minors. IMO Look at the detail! Looks like my Beretta 9mm! Not all have the Orange cap. 15yr old kids feel "cool" carrying these replicas. A cop will have a hard time knowing if the below gun is a fake.

I'm sure the kid meant no harm and hopefully the penalty is not severe. But the parent that purchased this should get a smack so they could wake up.
