I agree that A-3728 would politicize the issue of wildlife management
and, therefore, will oppose the measure should it come before us for
consideration.

Subject: A3728 DEP Commissioner Veto

Dear Honorable Charlotte Vandervalk,

I would like to formally state my opposition to Assembly bill 3728.
A3728 would make the practice of wildlife management a political process
instead of a scientific one. By use of the VETO, it would also give
total control of wildlife management to the Commissioner of the
Department of Environmental Protection Agency, instead of management by
Committee as we have now. Wildlife management by Committee has worked
beautifully since 1945, resulting in more game animals, non-game
animals, and species habitat for the residents of New Jersey to enjoy.

This bill targets hunters directly, as it fails to mention fishing or
anglers anywhere. This bill would take all science out of wildlife
management. The Fish & Game Council relies on the State's Wildlife
Biologists for information and recommendations when formulating the Fish
and Game Code. Hunting seasons and bag limits are adjusted, amended,
enacted, or suspended based on science, not knee-jerk reaction to animal
rights activists or management by emotion. This practice removes the
political aspect from wildlife management, ensuring that all New
Jerseyians can enjoy our wildlife and wild places.

In closing, A3728 is a bad piece of legislation. It's bad for the
Division of Fish and Wildlife, bad for New Jersey's Hunters, and bad for
New Jersey's wildlife. I hope that you will not support this
legislation.

Respectfully,

Jim B.
