For The Herald

While most of New Jersey still slumbers Monday, there will be a lot of activity going on in Beemerville. The opening day of bear season is also the first day of the annual and less controversial "deer season," also called the six-day firearm buck season.

Although things have changed over the years, breakfast is still served at Space Farms for friends and neighbors in the wee hours of the morning.

Looking back, Fred Space says his mother, Elizabeth "Grandma" Space, would host a breakfast at her house on opening day for as long as he could remember, planning for the event with the same intensity as she would any Christmas or Thanksgiving dinner.

Bill Shelton, the longtime superintendent of the Stillwater Township School District, remembers that, not so long ago, many Sussex County schools were closed on the opening day of the six-day deer season because few students came to school that day and much of the staff preferred to sit in the deer woods rather than be in an empty classroom.

Parents fault, too much reliance on electronic babysitters...
