I'm thinking about buying a GPS,what should I look for in one? Also, got any suggestions on a good one that isn't real expensive?

To me, the most important thing was that it would work in the woods. Under the canopy of trees. After that, an electronic comp [no swearing please] is nice. I have a Magellan Sport Trac Map, and I have not had it in a place in NJ (other than inside buildings) that I could not get a signal.

I have the garmin etrex vista, I love it, allows you to mark waypoints (bait piles) and also allows me to log them into my computer and save different profiles (fishing spots, hunting spots (pa, ny nj) etc.

It has a digital comp [no swearing please] and has never given me a problem ever.

I've never used one,how do they work? I'm going to Canada this week fishing. Do I have to have a canadian map DLed into it? And then what do you do,do you just hit a button and it will track your route so that you can follow it back? And can you mark places like where hidden rocks are in rivers and such? And can you do this with all units?

I have the GPS V -

Downloading the map disc ate up tons of memory on my pc. When I went to transfer the data back to the unit, it erased previously stored data and maps.

I started again from scratch and the unit would not complete the download.

I contacted Garmin and was told to download a patch from there website.

Still has glitches.

I have an older model, a garmin GPS 12xl that I've had for about 5 years. I love it. I've never had a problem with (signal or otherwise) except in my new truck (something about the metalic content in the windows)... but I got an external antenna for about $30 and problem solved. You can pick them off of ebay for about $100.
