10 miles off with a container vessel? Anythings possible but I think the main north/south shipping route is more like 35 miles off. We've had some close calls running at night, for an inexperienced passenger like myself I could say that my spatial senses were completley off. It was hard to tell if the cargo vessles were 10 miles or 500 yards away.
Thats what happened to the cape may scallop guys few years back. They found the boat that hit them but no negligence was found on the cargo ships behalf due to the fact they had the right of way.
Paint sample taken on a dive to the wreckage matched up with pain ton the cargo vessel. It was proven they were and nothing could be done.
