On Sunday I hunted public land and I was able to fill my EAB tag with a yearling doe.[tasty] I have a spot on my private property that I was waiting to hunt until the wind was right.
I watched the weather and told the office my afternoon would be filled with appointments so don't disturb me. Needless to say, I had about 10 calls I had to take while in my stand. I still haven't learned to turn my phone off!![wallmad]
I was set up by about 1:30. At 2:30 a small spike comes in, followed by two mature does a few minuted later. The second doe came in real cautious, nose in the air and looked right at me for what seemed like forever. Finally, she mellowed out and went about her business. The wind swirled for a second, she put her nose up again and bolted taking the other two with her.
Another spike came and went at about 4:30 also real cautious.
At 6:30 a 5 pt came in and hung around a while. I held out hoping for something bigger. I finally decided to take him. I drew and released immediately and he bolted into the thick stuff around this spot. I heard him stop as if he was trying to figure out what happened. I climbed down and couldn't find my arrow so I'm thinking bad shot. I took a quick look around, no blood.
I went to my truck and unloaded figuring it would be best to look for it first thing in the morning in daylight.
After a call or two, I started to think that maybe when he stopped, he actually stopped. After all, I didn't hear him run after that, even when I poked around a bit.
I went to look and found him within 30 seconds of getting to my stand spot exactly where I thought he stopped. I hit him through the shoulder and into the far shoulder. He ran no more than 40 yards.
He's not big but I'm bowhunting about 4 years and he's my first bow buck so I'm happy.
Now I may just wait till permit bow to go back out.
Here he is.
