New (potential) gun owner from northern Bergen County. This is a great site for understanding all of the screwed up laws that this state seems to create out of thin air. Please excuse my following rant, I had to vent and the people on this forum understand all too well what I'm going through.

I submitted my FID application on April 1 (ha ha) to get an accurate measure of just how long it would take to receive my card. I was really hoping that I would have it for the Memorial Day weekend, to sneak out to ranges and shops, so I stopped by the PD the Thursday before to check up on it. Yippee, all the paperwork was submitted and all that needed to be done was to type up the card and have the chief sign it. I was told that I should have it by this week...

I waited til Thursday of this week to call the firearms officer, and he said that it was a really busy weekend and that he only got to type up the card that day. He said that he put it on the chief's desk to sign, and that I should be getting the phone call to pick it up in the morning. Awesome! I waited all day by the phone, but by 4 pm I figured I'd go down there to see if it was ready to be picked up. When I got there, the dispatcher had to get in contact with the officer, who said that the chief never got around to signing it.

At this point my pupils began to vibrate with frustration, rage, disbelief, you name it. I "calmly" explained to the dispatcher that NJ state law is 30 days, and I was going on 60. He said that the chief had left for the weekend (4 pm on a workday?) and wouldn't be back til Monday, at which point I could call him. I told him that I'd talk to him on the phone right now. I then requested that the dispatcher leave a note for the chief stating that I expected to pick up my signed card first thing Monday morning.

Was I out of line? (sarcasm) Of course, the shotgun, pistol, and .22 rifle that I found GREAT prices on were sold today, and my weekend trip with some buddies to go shooting in NYS is now cancelled. At least I can still buy more than firearm per month, so life must be good in the Garden State.

I got mine through Hazlet over 10 years ago... it took 7 months. I've spoken to several guys in Hazlet since, and that seems to be par for the course here.
