I have been thinking of getting a feeder for deer hunting, currently I put out a few pounds when I go out but sometimes its a week or more before I can get back. So to keep the deer coming during these off times I would like to set up a feeder.
I normally hunt a private property onto of a hill so rocky and uneven terrain, there is also a lone bear that wonders the area from time to time.
I was looking at a tripod feeder but after liking at it, all I can see is it falling over and breaking.
Then I was thinking one of those 5gal ones but I don't know how i will get it into a tree.
I did that but the deer would eat through it in 2 days. Waist of corn. I was looking at the feeders so I can put out maybe 2 pounds a day then i wont burn through it that fast.
I guess maybe a hanging feeder would be the best, just in case a bear did come through (its very seldom that he is around). any ideas on how to hang it?
Hang a pulley from a branch about 10-12' up. Thread a rope through the pulley and tie the feeder to it. Tie the other end of the rope off on a lower branch so you can untie it to lower the feeder to fill it.
moultrie makes a cheap dawn and dusk feeder. like 17 bucks or something like that. they work great. all you have to do is attach it to a bucket. even comes with batteries
i use the 5 gal feeder takes 40lbs of corn set for midday only or early morn and evening corn last 4 or 5 days with minium setting ....works great cost about 50 bucks in cabelas cat all set up set up with rope an pully on limb raise an lower to fill
get a 55 gal. drum and cut a hole in the bottom of the front part making yourself a gravity feeder. i think there is a guy on here that routinely gives away 55 gal. drums too. cheap and easy. [up]
Home Depot has these big angle brackets, I lag bolt them to a tree , then put cable lock around tree , I lock feeder on with a padlock threw hole in bracket
CBJ625 is right. I use a 6.5 gallon feeder and it only last 5 days when feeding 2 times a day. I also hunt an area that has bears so I have invested in this feeder below. It is sturdy and the only thing it does not come with is the varmint cage.
Get 2 ropes, thread one through the pulley to hold the feeder. The other is tied to the pulley, throw it over the branch (which you can't acess). Pull up the pulley to desired hight and tie off. Then tie on you feeder, lift and tie that one off.
the 30,25,or 15 gal drums are best for hanging. 55's are too heavy. I recomend hanging from sturdy limb. off the ground so no one can mess with it, including bears!
Im not as worried about people messing with it as I am this bear, he has done some damage to chicken coops, bee hives and also bird feeders. When he comes through you know he was their.
I watched him take out a bird feeder I had set up on a solid 2" steel pole 10' up.
He stood up and bent the pole right over. Estimated 700lb, and easy 8' standing.
Nothing really stops him, even went through a electric fence I put around the bee hives.
So cheaper the better. I think I might try the cheap hanging feeder. Because if i do a gravity feeder one I will go through corn 10x faster, and two if he comes through I don't think I will have any corn left. [ko].
I have a brand new wildgame innovations tripod feeder sitting in my garage. Put together never used. I bought it at tractor supply for $109.00. Ill let it go for $75.00/ the feeder unit itself retails for 55.00.
use a fishing wieght and some some heavy test line . whip the sinker over the limb you want then pull some thin black coated aircraft up over the limb tie it to the feeder pull it up tie it off to a tree step near the ground and cover the excess cable with leaves. attach some brush to the feeder will make it less noticable along with the thin black cable.
i have been using the 5gal hanging feeder for about 4 years.no problem .u must use a pully other wise its diffcult to pull up over a limb.set for midday only once u have them coming in.corn last at lease a week maybe more.
also if u hang it high enough when the leaves are on the trees its not that noticable.approx 10 to 12 ft up. again talking about hanging feeder
