this is called a rub, a scrape is made by pawing the leaves and exposing the dirt in order to leave their scents in there

To answer the question deer work ground scrapes all year. Usually the first scrapes you see that are active are made by dominant bucks. young bucks make the most scrapes. older bucks make less scrapes and visit them more often. Bucks deposit scent from their orbital glands usually on an over hanging branch. Usaully durring spring and summer months they won't scrape leaves out but they will continue to deposit scent from their orbital glands all year.
