For the first time in its 50-year history, the Nature Conservancy's New Jersey chapter has allowed hunters on one of its preserves to help cull an overabundant deer population eating its way through the state's forests.
The fact that the Nature Conservancy, an agency committed to protecting wildlife and its habitat, has called for a hunt signifies the role deer play in devastating the state's ecology.
