I got a little offbeat question here. My wife was doing the dishes a few minutes ago when she got the shit scared out of her. At first we thought someone threw a rock at the window, but upon further inspection we found a fairly large woodpecker. Apparently it did what birds sometiimes do and flew full speed into the window. Unfortunately the woodpecker died, I imagine that its neck was broken.

I'm curious, would I be allowed to have it mounted? Such a beautiful creature, it would be a shame to waste such an animal by simply chuckin it in the woods. Do you think I should call F&G or the Audobon Society?

Pileated Woodpeckers are around but rare. There are bird groups that keep an eye out for them. Call the state or a reputable taxidermist for guidance.

First and only time I have seen one in the woods was deer hunting in NY state back in 1987. Came over a rise and there it was on the ground no more than 20 feet in front of me, didn't know what it was at the time but man it was a sight i'll never forget.

I'd call DF&W first to be on the safe side, but you can't go wrong with a nice pedestal mount...

My daughter has a woodpecker skull that she found while on vacation in South Carolina. It had been completely cleaned by ants. Amazing structure in the beak. It actually has tiny bones that flex and act as shock-absorbers. I always wondered how they kept from getting headaches!

Unless you get the permit you are not allowed to even pick it up. The criteria for the permits are very strict. Only schools, parks, museums and certain other places can receive them.

So just chuck it then? Do you think I would be able to donate it to one of the mentioned institutions?
