I was turkey hunting yesterday in Morris County when I came across this neat box turtle. I snapped a couple of pics with my cell phone before I picked him up knowing he would close up. Sure enough, after I took the pics and picked him up, he did just that. I put him back where he was and let him go on his way. I also found 2 in September while looking for a deer. I found those 2 within a half hour of each other and within a couple hundred yards. :)

Cool picture. I came across this one on the 2nd, but he/she was locked up tight and wouldn't come out :(

Cool pic. I had a trail camera pic of one last year. It was eating some bait I had down and a squirrel set off the camera. It was very hard to see the turtle in the pic, but he was there.

I saw two crossing Morris turnpike on Monday. Traffic stopped, a contractor hopped out and carried them across the road.[up] Quite a few in this area, always fun to see. Should see some snappers near water too soon right[confused]

The male has a central concave area in the rear lobe of the plastron, while the female has a flatter or more convex plastron. Most males have red eyes; females have yellow-brown eyes.

That picture does not show the red eyes of the male.

And the plastron would be what?
Top of the shell is the Carapace and the bottom half of the shell is the Plastron. "Plastron" could be a Star Trek gizmo .... "Scotty - energize the plastron and give these Romulans what fer...." [rofl][rofl]

As a child 30+ years ago I would find a box turtle about once a week while playing and hiking in several sections of woods in my town. In the last 15+ years I think I only saw one while hunting in the fall and then just the last 2 years have come across 3. I saved one crossing a road last year and assisted it to the other side into a field.

My son loves turtles and it is great to see them out there and maybe making a comeback.
