I was just out on my driveway watching my kids ride thier bikes and a 200-250 pound bear came around the corner from the front of the house! It was about 15 yards from us! I grabbed the kids and shoved them into the garage and yelled at the bear! He/she then ran into the front yard next door, around the house then up through the back yard and into the woods! He/she was cool! I didn't have time to get a picture of him![sad] Maybe next time!

I used to live on Hillside over past viking autobody back in 1997 and I once had 7 Bears in my yard at one time. There are allot of Bears in the Greenpond section of Rockaway.

They have been showing up in Cumberland County quite a bit this year too. Actually, there were several reports of them last year, but they were not taken too seriously. One good sized bear was hit by a car right near the Port Norris SP Barracks last year and cleaned up very quickly.

The reason they're visible now is that it is their "Rut". They breed in june/July. Boars will kill offspring with a sow, so out of necessity, the sows chase off the juveniles. What we typically see now are displaced juveniles (nainly adolescent males) who are confused, and trying to establish new territories.
P.S. I had bear scat in my driveway the other day.

are you sure it was bear scat? [confused]

I think you should package it up and sent it to Bradley Campbell to be sure.[smirk]
