Those who hunt deer in Southern NJ should take a look at page 56 of the new Digest. http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/pdf/2009/dighnt54-68.pdf

Here you will see the Hunters Helping the Hungry program has expanded to the Southern part of the state. The Food Bank of South Jersey, serving Salem, Gloucester, Camden and Burlington counties, will be accepting venison and distributing it to feed the hungry in those counties.

The Buck Stop, a deer check-in station and butcher shop located in Norma NJ, (Pittsgrove Township), will be the participating butcher. I talked to both Stan (the butcher) and Ed (food bank) today and both are excited about this program. We just need hunters to start the venison flowing once the season begins. Stan does a very nice job, so don't be afraid to take your own deer their, as well as one for a donation.

Cost to the hunter is $10.00 for a deer over 50lbs, $25.00 for a deer under 50lbs. So shoot some does to keep your farmers happy, and drop them off with a ten dollar bill to Stan and help feed the hungry.

It's a great program that will hopefully be expanding, but will need your participation to make it work. Hopefully, more butchers will be coming on board soon, maybe closer to you. If you have a butcher in mind that you think would participate, send me and email or pm.

That is a great thing. The problem is, I hope the deer are there this year to shoot.

The population was hit hard over the past few years, between unlimited doe, extended seasons, blue tongue, there weren't many deer.

Ocean County is pretty big. Depending on where you are, this guy might be closer to you. He is also in the program.
