Hey guys im interested in raising some turkeys, not to eat or anything. Basically pets I guess, to let walk around the yard and farm. Any info on what kind to get? I see some online hatcheries advertising wild eastern turkey. Are they illegal to buy if they are wild? Any info would be appreciated, Thanks

Unless things have changed in the past 5 years or so...

I believe it is illegal to raise Wild Turkeys in N.J. without a permit to do so. And the state does come and inspect, to make sure they are not free rangeing and in a secure enclosure.
The fear is that they could introduce diseases to the truely wild birds.

giant bronze, looks like a wild turkey but get to be well over 50 lbs. There are blue slates, bourbon reds, black spanish, royal palm and domestic whites . as for the wild ones you do need a permit to raise and release, but still doable. We had a huge giant bronze that though it was a dog. peeps are hard to raise.( need to be on wire)But fun. try this place see if there still in busness.clearveiw stock farm and hatchery Po box 399 gratz pa 17030.let them send you a catalog. If not i will look through my old paper work for a few others.

Thanks alot for your info. Im basically looking turkeys that i dont have to "babysit" if you know what I mean. I just want to let them live and roam around the property. Fox and raccoons are another worry I have also.

Is it possible to get real wild turkey and release them? (There are no wild ones near by) I would be interested in that also
