Hunters bag trophies on first day of bear hunt
Tuesday, December 06, 2005
BY BRIAN T. MURRAY
Star-Ledger Staff
It was just before 8:30 a.m. yesterday morning when Terry Atkins fired his Ithaca 12-gauge pump-gun and hit the lumbering black bear in the left side, high in the chest. But the large bruin did not drop.

Instead, it took off on a dead run, forcing Atkins, who was sitting about 15 feet off the ground in a portable tree-stand, to quickly let go with a second round.

Again, an explosion cut through the freezing morning air and echoed against the forested Rockaway Township mountainside. Still, the bear kept moving, and disappeared in some thicket a few hundred yards away.
