The UBNJ asked the 3 leading Gubernatorial Candidates, Schundler, Forrester, & Corzine, to respond to a short bowhunting oriented questionnaire.
Only Bret Schundler bothered to respond.
1. What are your views on the tradition of hunting?
Hunting traditions are part of the founding culture and heritage left to us from the fathers of our country. These traditions should be preserved and passed on to future generations. Hunting is both a sport and a means of provision and must remain as part of our culture.
2. Would you support legislation such as S2475/A3736, which would permit Sunday bowhunting for Whitetail deer on private property and State Wildlife Management Areas?
I do support legislation that would permit Sunday Bowhunting for Whitetail deer on private property and state Wildlife Management Areas. We must keep in mind that others wish to recreate on state Wildlife Management Areas on Sundays too, and I look forward to working with the Sportsman Community and the Fish and Game Council in order to accomplish this.
3. Would you support legislation that would reduce the safety zone from 450' to 150' for bowhunters, similar to the law just enacted in Pennsylvania?
I would consider supporting legislation that would reduce the safety zone for bowhunters to a zone less than 450’. I wish to work with the Sportsman Community to arrive at a comfortable and safe zone, and I will look for guidance from the Fish and Game Council.
4. Would you support or oppose legislation that would expand and alter the make up of the Fish & Game Council, to include representatives from recognized anti-hunting organizations, and your reasons why?
I would oppose the expansion or alteration of the Fish and Game Council to include representatives from recognized anti-hunting organizations. The management of hunting and wildlife should be determined by sound scientific reasoning and not political or emotional influence.
5. Are you in favor of having the Fish & Game Council establish hunting seasons in New Jersey based upon sound scientific research and recommendations as presented by the NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife, and your reasons why?
I am in favor of establishing a Black Bear hunting season. I believe sound scientific research has already endorsed this action. I supported a Black Bear hunt four years ago when I first ran for Governor and I will continue to support a Black Bear hunt as long as sound scientific research recommends doing so.
6. Would you support a State Constitutional Amendment that guarantees New Jersey residents the right to hunt, fish, and trap, subject only to reasonable regulations?
I will support a State Constitutional Amendment that guarantees New Jersey residents the right to hunt, fish, and trap subject to reasonable regulations. [up]
